Feng Shui Tips for the Altar
One must have the right combination of luck to have a well-balanced, auspicious and healthy life. These are the heaven luck, the earth luck and the man luck. For man to obtain his life’s objective, he should work hard. This is called man luck. Together with this, he needs the support of other people around him. He then must have the right place or setting to have his talent in the right venue. The heaven luck comes in the form of the right timing for his goals to realize.
Heaven luck comes from God or in other religions, the divine or Supreme Being, the creator, the almighty. From him comes the blessing man needs to have his effort in the right place at the right time. You must have a symbol like an altar to pay respect, honor, pray and invoke the blessings of God.
Feng shui is the third factor or the earth luck that guides humans to the right directions people must face and the correct area and position of things. Even the altar must be subjected to Feng Shui so that man’s prayers will be heard and answered.
The altar is “Yin” - tranquil non-moving and cold. It should be in the position and place in the house where there will be no negative effects on the occupants’ health, wealth and efficiency.
Though it is a common practice of many Filipinos to place an altar in the bedroom, in Feng Shui, this is not correct. Why? Because the bedroom is a place of rest and “Yang” chi or positive energy should either be less or absent. The altar belongs to the yin chi. It tends to double or magnify the negative energy if placed in the bedroom. Moreover, acts made in the master’s bedroom (especially marital) are considered disrespectful to the “Divine Being”.
Yin energy is sucked into the bedroom every time its door opens to an altar outside but facing or in line with the door. The occupant as a result may become unhealthy. The door creates a clash with the altar and disperses the energy that accumulates through the prayers. The clash is also produced when an altar is placed on or above the landing of a staircase. To remedy, transfer the altar somewhere else.
An altar should have a solid wall for its backing. No water closet or sink with faucet should be behind the wall that backs up the altar. The constant flushing or draining movement of the water will affect the stability of the family. Likewise, there should be no water closet or sink with faucet directly above an altar.
Here are some more important pointers on the position or placement of the altar in the home.
- An altar placed on the next lower level directly below a sink or water closet will scatter and dissipate the good energy of the altar.
- A staircase or the landing of the stairs above the altar will suppress the altar’s chi. The idea of people walking above the altar is a sign of disrespect to God.
- The exposed beam above an altar will make the family’s life under pressure. It will also “divide” the family’s wealth and harmony. To remedy this, relocate the altar.
- A bed, specially a marital one, likewise is disrespectful to God. In effect, the breadwinner will be constantly burdened. Relocate the bed to remedy the problem.
- In order to achieve, spiritual, mental, physical and material well-being, an altar should be put on a stable ground. It must not have any movements or vibrations below.
- Do not put an aquarium under an altar as an attempt to decorate it. The instability am aquarium provides the altar will affect the stability of the family’s condition.
- A water closet, shower or sink with faucet on a level directly below the altar also makes the floor where the altar stands, unstable or not solid.
- An over, stove, furnace directly under an altar will agitate the good chi and make the living condition of a family full of irritations, sickness and instability.
- An altar placed above a house’s cantilever puts the chi in the house on the edge of a blade because this position seems to make the altar sit on that blade that “slices” or cuts the good energy in half
- If a bed is placed in line with the altar outside the room, the occupant’s health will be greatly affected
The northwest is the sector of wisdom, mentor support, helpful people, heavenly intervention, the wise or the sage. The northwest position of the house or corner of the room is an ideal place to put an altar. It is where the Chinese place the Kwan Kung (symbol of authority and wisdom) to bring into the family the luck of wise mentors and helpful people. Also, a painting or statues of Fuk Luk Sau or the men of longevity, wealth and wisdom will enhance this sector. An altar should be stable-footed and well-leveled for stability and security in the family. It should be on a sturdy table or strong shelf. Do not enclose images or icons in a glass cabinet or covered by a glass dome.
